What is cotton gauze?

Ah the cotton gauze! This fabric, in fashion for a few years, that we love so much. So soft and light, cotton gauze is as pleasant to wear as it is to have in your interior decoration. But do you know its origin? Its use? Do you know how to take care of it and keep it as long as possible in an impeccable state? In this article, we tell you everything about this fabric that will have no more secrets for you!
Everything you need to know about cotton gauze!

The origin of cotton gauze?

If cotton gauze has been present for a few years in ready-to-wear or household linen collections, you should know that it is not at its beginning. Ask your mother and/or grandmother if they used cotton gauze, and the answer will be yes! And especially the use of swaddles, so practical and soft for baby. Besides, who hasn't used them?

But let's go back in time.
It is in the 13th century that cotton gauze was created and more precisely in Gaza in Palestine, hence the origin of its name. In the 17th and 18th centuries, it became trendy and very used by dancers to make their tutus, the cotton gauze was ideal for its lightness and fineness. This is how spinning mills were created in Paris and Lyon.
Over the years, cotton gauze has been used in several sectors of activity, notably in the medical field, where it is still used as compresses, or in archaeology to allow delicate samples to be taken.

How is cotton gauze made?

Cotton gauze is first and foremost a weaving method composed of two thin and light layers, almost transparent. The weaving, quite technical of this fabric, is done by crisscrossing and spreading threads, thus allowing to obtain an airy, flexible and breathable fabric.
You have certainly heard of the double cotton gauze. It is simply made of two layers of cotton gauze that are joined together by invisible stitches at regular intervals. Double cotton gauze is more resistant and is used in household linen such as bed linen, in upholstery and in clothing.
Generally, gauze is made of cotton, but there is also gauze made of other natural fibers such as linen.

How to use cotton gauze?

In the trade, you will find mainly double cotton gauze. This fabric is perfect for making children's and adults' clothes, such as skirts, dresses, overalls, blouses... But also sleeping bags, small blankets such as quilts, bags, table linen such as tablecloths or napkins...
If you choose organic cotton gauze, you should know that this natural fiber fabric is hypoallergenic and well adapted to sensitive skin.
As for bed linen, slipping into cotton gauze sheets is very pleasant. In summer, thanks to its lightness, your nights will be more comfortable. In winter, you will have the feeling of being in a cocoon of softness.

How to maintain cotton gauze?

Even if cotton gauze is resistant, it is necessary to know how to maintain it with finesse. Wash it at 30° in delicate wash with a soft spin. As for drying, let it dry in the open air, preferably in the shade. And good news, no need to iron the fabric! It is precisely this crumpled side, very natural, which makes all the charm of the cotton gauze. Above all, forget the tumble dryer which will damage the cotton gauze fiber.

What does it look like when sewing?

Cotton gauze is a very pleasant and easy to sew fabric. It allows a multitude of realizations as much in clothing, in fashion accessories, in baby accessories as in decoration.
As with any fabric, it is recommended to wash the fabric before sewing, as it will tend to shrink.
Before cutting the fabric, prepare all your materials. Fine needles, pliers, cotton thread, your machine and your good mood! You can overcast the fabric to make your work easier. If you need to iron it, do it on the reverse side.

When sewing clothes, choose loose fitting patterns rather than curved ones. Indeed, the fabric being fluid, it will facilitate your realization.
Today, cotton gauze is available in many different colors and patterns: navy, water green, mustard, coral, pale pink, with golden or silver polka dots, with fine lurex stripes, lace cotton gauze... All of which will allow you to create beautiful creations for a look that is both timeless and modern.
