Jersey, the perfect fabric for clothing

It is ideal for beginners in sewing or for sewing desires without headaches. Indeed, it requires much less adaptations, modifications and morphological headaches. Because jersey is stretchy, it will naturally adapt to your body for a minimum of effort in sewing and alterations.

T-shirts

Jersey fabric is a soft, breathable cotton and a perfect choice for tee shirts or polo shirts to enhance their softness.

You can sew t-shirts with sleeves and a simple neckline, add elbow patches and other embellishments. The advantage of jersey is that you can sew styles that are as close to the body as they are over-size.
Vary the pleasures, sew long sleeve t-shirts, short sleeve t-shirts, or ¾ sleeve t-shirts!

A tank top

Basic of basic especially for hot weather, or to put under a slightly transparent top or a shirt, the tank top is an essential of the dressing. Plain or printed, you will be able to decline it as much as you want! To sew this creation, you can start from an old tank top and reproduce the pattern!

Skirts

Comfortable, easy to make, trendy and, to top it all off, wearable in summer and winter, sewn jersey skirts are a must have in your closet.
Wear a tube or pencil skirt to work, or opt for a light and quick to make gathered skirt.
For the more experienced sewer, why not sew a dress? You can find sewing patterns for skater dresses, sheath dresses or other pretty models.

A legging

A wardrobe essential: leggings. It's useful in all circumstances: playing sports, lounging on the couch, having a coffee with friends, ...
There are many occasions to make this basic essential profitable, so why wait to make your own?
You will need cotton jersey and elastic and that's it!

A diaper bag or cotton bag

When you have a little baby at home, you always need diapers and cotton pads. That's why having a nice jersey bag is always a good choice when you need to change your baby. You can take it everywhere and change diapers quickly and easily. It is the ideal pouch to carry diapers and PPMC washable makeup squares.

A baby blanket

Why not make a pretty baby blanket out of soft jersey? With a single pattern or with several squares of fabric, you can create a nomadic blanket that will follow baby everywhere!

Decorative objects

Sewing doesn't have to mean clothes! Jersey fabric is stretchy, you can sew cushion covers, cover a photo frame, make a nice mouse pad ... in short this fabric is ideal for everyday objects.

Underwear

We finish with the coolest idea: underwear!
A boxer! Ideal to start with the jersey and tame this fabric. For men, for children or even for women, the boxer is a basic, perfect to use your jersey scraps and mix colors and prints!

A jersey panty or shorty. As simple as the boxer, with even less fabric, you'll need jersey and elastic. Again, have fun with colors, shine, and prints.

Some tips for sewing stockinette

Here are some sewing tips for stockinette, to have a creation that "falls" well
  • Jersey does not fray
  • Install a special jersey needle on your sewing machine. This round-tipped needle will not weaken the fabric
  • Preferably use an elastic stitch (two stitches in front and one in back): the advantage is that the seam does not crack even if you make wide movements!
  • Pay attention to the direction of the fabric, jersey has a right side and a wrong side (the right side is the one with V shapes, the wrong side is the one with waves)
  • Don't wash it before sewing because the stockinette fabric may curl!
